DAY 1 — The Divine Story of Purushottam Maas

Why Adhik Maas Became the Most Sacred Month in Sanatan Dharma

Introduction

In the spiritual traditions of Sanatan Dharma, every month carries its own importance. Some months are associated with Lord Shiva, some with Lord Krishna, and others with sacred festivals and rituals. But among all these months, one month is considered especially divine and spiritually powerful — Purushottam Maas, also known as Adhik Maas.

This sacred month appears once every three years according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Unlike ordinary months, Purushottam Maas is fully dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the protector and sustainer of the universe.

Many devotees spend this month:

  • Chanting Vishnu mantras

  • Reading Bhagavad Gita

  • Observing fasts

  • Performing charity

  • Listening to spiritual kathas

  • Practicing meditation and devotion

But the story behind Purushottam Maas is deeply emotional and inspiring.

It is not just the story of a sacred month.

It is the story of rejection transforming into greatness through the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

What is Adhik Maas?

The Hindu calendar follows the movement of the moon, while the solar calendar follows the movement of the sun. Because of this difference, an imbalance gradually develops between the lunar and solar years.

To correct this imbalance, an extra month is added approximately every three years. This additional month is called Adhik Maas.

The word “Adhik” means “extra.”

Initially, this month was treated differently from the other months because it did not have a ruling deity. Unlike Shravan Maas or Kartik Maas, it had no special identity.

Because of this, people considered it inauspicious.

No weddings were performed. No celebrations took place. Many people avoided beginning new activities during this period.

Over time, the month itself became symbolic of neglect and sadness.

The Pain of Adhik Maas

According to ancient scriptures and spiritual kathas, Adhik Maas became deeply hurt because everyone ignored it.

Every month had honor and respect:

  • Chaitra was celebrated

  • Shravan was sacred to Lord Shiva

  • Kartik was loved by Lord Krishna

  • Navratri and other festivals brought joy to different months

But Adhik Maas remained alone.

People called it:

  • Unlucky

  • Empty

  • Worthless

  • Inauspicious

The month could no longer tolerate the humiliation.

Filled with sorrow, Adhik Maas went from one deity to another asking for help and acceptance.

But no deity accepted responsibility for it.

The pain of rejection continued to grow.

Finally, helpless and heartbroken, Adhik Maas reached the divine abode of Lord Vishnu — Vaikunth.

Adhik Maas Reaches Vaikunth

Vaikunth, the heavenly residence of Lord Vishnu, is described in scriptures as a place filled with divine light, peace, lotus lakes, and celestial energy.

When Adhik Maas entered Vaikunth, it bowed before Lord Vishnu with tears in its eyes.

The month cried and said:

“Prabhu, every month has respect and purpose, but I am rejected everywhere. Nobody accepts me. Everyone insults me because I have no lord or identity.”

Lord Vishnu listened silently.

The compassion of the Lord filled the atmosphere.

Seeing the suffering of Adhik Maas, Lord Vishnu became emotional.

He understood the pain of being ignored and unwanted.

Then, with a divine smile, Lord Vishnu spoke:

“Do not be sad anymore. From today, I bless you with my own name.”

The Birth of Purushottam Maas

Lord Vishnu then declared:

“You shall no longer be known merely as Adhik Maas. From today onward, you will be called Purushottam Maas.”

The word “Purushottam” means:

  • The Supreme Being

  • The Highest Divine Consciousness

  • One of the sacred names of Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna

By giving his own name to the month, Lord Vishnu transformed its destiny forever.

Then the Lord gave extraordinary blessings to Purushottam Maas:

Divine Blessings Given by Lord Vishnu

  • Anyone who worships sincerely during this month will receive multiplied spiritual benefits.

  • Charity performed during this month will remove negative karma.

  • Devotion during Purushottam Maas will bring peace and prosperity.

  • Reading scriptures during this period will purify the mind.

  • Fasting and meditation will help devotees attain spiritual progress.

  • The month itself will become more sacred than ordinary months.

From that moment, the rejected month became the most spiritually respected month in Sanatan Dharma.
