Shravana Putrada Ekadashi holds a sacred place in the Hindu calendar as a divine day dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the desire for a child. Falling in the holy month of Shravana (July–August), this Ekadashi is especially revered by couples longing for progeny, and is considered a blessed day for prayers, fasting, and spiritual cleansing.
🌺 Why is Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Celebrated?
The term Putrada means "giver of sons" (putra = son, da = giver). In Vedic traditions, having a son was often associated with continuing the family lineage and performing ancestral rites (Pind Daan). Those who face difficulty in childbirth or wish for healthy progeny observe this Ekadashi with utmost faith.
🛕 Story Behind Shravana Putrada Ekadashi (Vrat Katha)
According to the Bhavishya Purana, in the ancient city of Bhadravati, King Mahijit of the Chandravanshi dynasty was childless. Despite a prosperous kingdom, the king and queen were unhappy and worried about their legacy.
Upon consulting the wise sage Lomesh, the king learned that in his past life he had unknowingly committed the sin of denying water to a thirsty cow, resulting in his present karma of being childless.
To absolve this sin, the sage advised the royal couple to observe the Shravana Putrada Ekadashi fast, offering sincere devotion to Lord Vishnu.
The king and queen followed the Ekadashi vrat with dedication, and soon they were blessed with a virtuous son.
🕉️ Rituals and Observance
Fasting: Devotees observe a strict fast – either Nirjala (without food and water) or Phalahari (fruits and milk). It begins at sunrise on Ekadashi and ends the next day after Parana.
Puja of Lord Vishnu: An idol or image of Lord Narayana (Vishnu) is worshipped with Tulsi leaves, Panchamrit, incense, lamp, and sacred chants like the Vishnu Sahasranama or Narayana Stotra.
Chanting & Bhajan: Devotees engage in night-long vigil and bhajans dedicated to Vishnu, fostering a devotional atmosphere.
Charity & Feeding the Needy: Giving food, clothes, and donations to Brahmins, cows, and the poor is highly meritorious on this day.
Couples Seeking Children: They especially participate in special Vishnu Pujas and Satyanarayan Katha to seek divine blessings for healthy children.
