Mahavir Jayanti, also known as Mahavir Janmotsav, is one of the most significant festivals in Jainism, marking the birth of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara. Celebrated with great devotion, this day reminds us of Mahavir Swami’s teachings on non-violence, truth, and spiritual enlightenment.

The Birth and Life of Lord Mahavir
Lord Mahavir was born on Chaitra Shukla Trayodashi (March-April) in 599 BCE (some sources suggest 615 BCE) in Kundalpur (modern-day Vaishali, Bihar). His father, King Siddhartha, and mother, Queen Trishala, were noble rulers who raised him in luxury. However, at the age of 30, Mahavir renounced his princely life and embarked on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual awakening.
After 12 years of intense meditation and austerity, he attained Keval Gyan (omniscience) and spent the rest of his life preaching the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (celibacy), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness). His teachings form the core of Jain philosophy today.
How Mahavir Jayanti is Celebrated
1. Special Prayers and Temple Rituals
Jain temples are beautifully decorated, and Lord Mahavir’s idol is bathed in a sacred ritual called Abhishek. Devotees chant prayers and perform pujas to seek his blessings.
2. Processions and Community Gatherings
Grand processions (Shobha Yatras) featuring Lord Mahavir’s idol are taken through the streets. Devotees sing bhajans, spread the message of non-violence, and engage in acts of charity.
3. Discourses and Spiritual Talks
Jain scholars and monks deliver sermons on Mahavir’s teachings, emphasizing the importance of peace, compassion, and ethical living in today’s world.
4. Charity and Acts of Kindness
Many Jain communities organize food donation drives, support shelters, and offer assistance to the needy, reflecting Mahavir’s principle of kindness towards all beings.
