🕉 Introduction
In the sacred Hindu calendar, Ekadashi is the most auspicious day dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. Among all Ekadashis, Jaya Ekadashi holds a unique place. It is observed during the Shukla Paksha of Magha month, when divine energies are at their peak.
The word “Jaya” means victory. Observing this Ekadashi gives devotees victory over sins, fear, sorrow, disease, negative energies, and the cycle of birth and death. It is said that no other fast equals the merit of Jaya Ekadashi.
📅 When is Jaya Ekadashi?
Jaya Ekadashi falls on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of Magha Shukla Paksha. The exact date changes every year according to the lunar calendar. Devotees observe the vrat from sunrise on Ekadashi till sunrise on Dwadashi.
🌿 Mythological Importance
According to the Padma Purana and Bhavishya Purana, Lord Krishna explained to Yudhishthira that observing Jaya Ekadashi washes away the worst sins. Even a person who has committed serious wrongs attains purity and liberation by the grace of Lord Vishnu.
It is also believed that this Ekadashi destroys pret dosha, pitru dosha, and negative karmic bondage.
📖 The Divine Story of Jaya Ekadashi
Once, in the heavenly kingdom of Indra, lived a Gandharva named Pushpadant and his wife Malini. They were assigned to sing devotional hymns in the court of Indra. However, one day they became distracted by their love for each other and failed to perform their duty with devotion.
Angered, Indra cursed them to be born on Earth as Pishach (ghostly beings). They wandered through forests in suffering for years.
One day, unknowingly, they observed Jaya Ekadashi—they neither ate nor drank, staying awake all night in pain and prayer. By the power of this sacred day, their curse was lifted, and they returned to their divine forms.
This proves the infinite power of this vrat.
