Overview
Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most sacred, powerful, and rewarding among all 24 Ekadashis. Known for its strict fasting (without water) and intense spiritual discipline, this Ekadashi is also called “Bhimseni Ekadashi” due to its origin linked to Bhim, the second Pandava brother.
Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi
Observing this one Ekadashi is considered equal to observing all 24 Ekadashis of the year.
It removes Maha Paap (greatest sins), grants health, wealth, and moksha.
It is highly beneficial for ancestors’ peace and pitra dosh nivaran.
The Vrat Katha (Story)
The legend of Nirjala Ekadashi comes from the Bhavishya Purana:
Bhima, the mighty Pandava, loved food and found it impossible to fast on all Ekadashi days. He approached Sage Vyasa, seeking a way to earn Ekadashi benefits without fasting every month.
Vyasa told him to observe just one Ekadashi—Nirjala Ekadashi—with total renunciation, not even drinking water. Bhima accepted and performed it with great dedication. Hence, this Ekadashi is also called “Bhimseni Ekadashi.”
Lord Vishnu blessed him and declared that this Ekadashi is equal to observing all other Ekadashis and grants ultimate liberation.
