Before the great war of Kurukshetra War, Barbarik had a boon of three powerful arrows that could defeat any army. He had vowed to always support the weaker side.
To test him, Krishna appeared in disguise and asked whom he would support. Barbarik replied that he would support whoever was losing. Krishna realized this would make the war endless.
Lord Krishna then asked for Barbarik’s head as daan (sacrifice). Without hesitation, Barbarik offered his head.
Pleased with his supreme devotion and sacrifice, Krishna blessed him:
“In Kaliyug, you will be worshipped as Shyam and fulfill the wishes of devotees. You will be known as the protector of the helpless.”
Thus, Barbarik became Khatu Shyam Ji.
