The Reward of Discipline and Self-Control
Day 11 Theme
“One who controls the mind conquers life itself.”
The eleventh day of Purushottam Maas teaches the importance of discipline, self-control, and inner balance. A restless mind creates suffering, while a controlled mind leads toward peace and spiritual awakening.
The Katha of the Young Prince
Long ago, there was a young prince named Veerendra. He was brave, intelligent, and born into great luxury. Whatever he desired was immediately given to him.
Slowly, the prince became addicted to comfort, pleasure, and praise. He lost interest in discipline, prayer, and dharma.
One day, a wise saint visited the kingdom during Purushottam Maas. Seeing the prince’s restless behavior, the saint said:
“A person who cannot control desires becomes a servant of the mind.”
The prince laughed.
“I am a prince. I control everything.”
The saint calmly handed him a small oil lamp and said:
“Walk across the palace without letting this flame extinguish. If the flame dies, you fail.”
Confidently, the prince began walking. But servants distracted him with music, delicious food, dancing, and praise. Each time he became distracted, the flame almost went out.
Finally, after intense focus and patience, he completed the task.
The saint smiled and asked:
“While protecting the flame, did you notice the distractions?”
The prince replied:
“No, Maharaj. My full attention was on the lamp.”
The saint then explained:
“That lamp is your soul. The distractions are worldly temptations. One who remains focused on dharma reaches Bhagwan safely.”
The prince deeply understood the lesson.
From that day onward, he began waking early, practicing meditation, controlling anger and desires, and praying daily to Lord Krishna.
Over time, he became not only a great king — but also a wise devotee.
