The Importance of Gratitude and Contentment
Day 13 Theme
“A grateful heart attracts divine blessings.”
The thirteenth day of Purushottam Maas teaches that happiness does not come from endless desires, but from gratitude and contentment. A person who constantly complains loses peace, while one who appreciates Bhagwan’s blessings experiences joy even in simplicity.
The Katha of the Two Friends
Long ago, in a peaceful village, two close friends lived together — Raghav and Madhav.
Raghav was wealthy. He had large fields, servants, expensive clothes, and plenty of gold. Yet he constantly complained.
“I need more wealth.”
“Others are more successful than me.”
“Bhagwan has not given me enough.”
Madhav, however, was poor. He worked hard every day as a potter and lived in a small hut. But every morning during Purushottam Maas, he offered simple flowers and water to Lord Vishnu with deep gratitude.
He would say:
“Prabhu, thank You for another day, food to eat, and strength to serve.”
One year, a severe drought struck the village. Crops failed, business slowed, and fear spread everywhere.
Raghav became angry and bitter. He blamed fate, shouted at workers, and lost peace completely.
Madhav also faced hardship, but he continued praying calmly and helping others whenever possible. Even when he had little food, he shared meals with hungry neighbors.
One evening, a saint visited the village during Purushottam Maas. Observing both men, the saint said:
“The richest person is not the one who owns the most — but the one who remains thankful.”
Soon, the villagers noticed something surprising. Though Madhav remained materially poor, his home was filled with peace, love, and respect. People naturally gathered around him because his gratitude created positivity everywhere.
Raghav finally realized:
Endless desires create emptiness, but gratitude creates abundance.
He later changed his attitude, began helping others, and started living with devotion and contentment.
