The Value of Charity and Generosity
Day 15 Theme
“What is given with a pure heart never goes to waste.”
The fifteenth day of Purushottam Maas teaches that charity done with humility and compassion purifies the soul. True donation is not measured by wealth, but by the sincerity and sacrifice behind it.
Bhagwan values even the smallest offering made with devotion.
The Katha of the Poor Woman’s Handful of Rice
Long ago, in a small village, lived a poor widow named Sushila. She survived by doing small household work and often struggled to arrange food for herself.
Despite her poverty, Sushila was deeply devoted to Lord Krishna. During Purushottam Maas, she observed prayers, simple fasting, and daily bhajan with complete faith.
One afternoon, while she was preparing her only meal — a small handful of rice — a tired saint arrived at her door asking for food.
For a moment, Sushila became worried.
“If I give this food away, what will I eat today?”
But immediately she remembered:
“Food offered in seva reaches Bhagwan Himself.”
Without hesitation, she respectfully offered the entire meal to the saint and drank only water herself that night.
The saint blessed her and quietly left.
The next morning, villagers gathered outside Sushila’s hut in surprise. A wealthy merchant from a nearby town had arrived searching for an honest and trustworthy person to manage a charitable kitchen he wished to build during Purushottam Maas.
Many villagers recommended Sushila because of her kindness and purity.
Soon, Sushila was given responsibility for feeding hundreds of poor people daily. Though she had once struggled for a single meal, Bhagwan transformed her life into a source of nourishment for others.
That night, Sushila dreamt of Lord Vishnu smiling and saying:
“No act of selfless charity is ever forgotten.”
