The Blessing of Humble Service (Nishkam Seva)
Day 18 Theme
“The hands that serve are often holier than the lips that only pray.”
The eighteenth day of Purushottam Maas teaches that selfless service performed without expecting reward is one of the highest forms of devotion. When service is done with humility and love, it becomes an offering directly to Bhagwan.
The Katha of the Temple Sweeper
Long ago, in a sacred town, there was a magnificent temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Every day, wealthy merchants, scholars, and noblemen visited the temple with grand offerings.
Among them lived an elderly man named Narayan Das. He was poor and had no money to donate. Since he could not offer gold, sweets, or expensive gifts, he decided to serve Bhagwan in another way.
Before sunrise every day during Purushottam Maas, Narayan Das would quietly sweep the temple courtyard, clean the pathways, and fill water pots for pilgrims.
He never asked for recognition.
Most visitors never even noticed him.
One day, a rich merchant proudly donated a large amount of gold to the temple and expected everyone to praise him. When the temple priest thanked him, the merchant asked:
“Surely Bhagwan must be most pleased with my offering.”
That night, the head priest had a divine dream. In the dream, Lord Krishna appeared and said:
“The gold donation is valuable, but My heart is especially pleased with the humble service of Narayan Das.”
The priest was surprised.
“Prabhu, he only sweeps the temple floor.”
Bhagwan replied:
“He serves without pride, expectation, or desire for recognition. Every act of selfless service reaches Me directly.”
The next morning, the priest shared the dream with the village. People began respecting Narayan Das greatly, but he remained humble.
He simply folded his hands and said:
“I am only cleaning Bhagwan’s path. The real blessing is being allowed to serve.”
And thus everyone learned:
Service done with humility is greater than charity done with pride.
