The Blessing of Seva and Compassion
Day 8 Theme
“The quickest path to Bhagwan is through selfless service.”
Day 8 of Purushottam Maas teaches that true devotion is not limited to prayers and rituals alone. Bhagwan is most pleased when we help others with compassion, humility, and pure intentions.
The Katha of the Old Widow
In a holy village near a sacred temple of Lord Vishnu, there lived an old widow named Gauri. She was very poor and survived by making small clay lamps.
Every Purushottam Maas, devotees from distant places came to the temple with expensive offerings, gold ornaments, sweets, and large donations.
Gauri had nothing valuable to offer.
Still, every evening she would light one small diya outside the temple and pray with complete devotion.
One rainy night during Purushottam Maas, an exhausted traveler arrived in the village. He was hungry, wet, and weak. Most people ignored him because they were busy preparing for a grand temple celebration.
Gauri saw the man shivering in the cold.
Even though she herself had very little food, she invited him into her tiny hut. She gave him warm water, simple food, and her only blanket for the night.
The traveler smiled peacefully and asked:
“Mother, why help a stranger when you yourself have so little?”
Gauri replied:
“Serving people in need is service to Bhagwan Himself.”
The next morning, the traveler disappeared. In his place, divine light filled the hut. Gauri realized that the traveler was none other than Lord Krishna testing her compassion.
Soon afterward, the villagers noticed that Gauri’s small diya outside the temple never extinguished, even during storms. People began respecting her pure devotion more than expensive offerings.
And thus, everyone learned:
Bhagwan accepts devotion offered through kindness and seva.
