✨ Introduction
Hindu traditions are deeply rooted in gratitude and purity. Among the many sacred days, Rishi Panchami holds special importance. Observed on the fifth day (Panchami) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, this day is dedicated to paying reverence to the Saptarishis (seven great sages) — Kashyap, Atri, Bharadwaj, Vishwamitra, Gautam, Jamadagni, and Vashishtha.
This vrat (fast) is mainly observed by women to seek forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes during their menstrual cycle as per traditional dharmic beliefs. It signifies purity, respect for sages, and spiritual discipline.
📖 Story Behind Rishi Panchami
According to scriptures, a Brahmin couple once faced immense difficulties due to unknown doshas caused by mistakes related to menstrual rules. Their daughter, upon consulting learned sages, was advised to observe Rishi Panchami Vrat. By fasting and worshipping the Saptarishis with utmost devotion, she attained purification and liberation from those sins.
From then, the tradition of observing this vrat spread widely among women for spiritual cleansing, forgiveness, and blessings from the sages.
🙏 Rituals and Puja Vidhi
On Rishi Panchami, devotees follow specific rituals with sincerity:
Early Morning Bath – Women take a holy bath, often with herbs like datun (herbal sticks) or soil, signifying purification.
Fasting (Vrat) – Observers keep a strict fast, consuming only fruits or plain food.
Worship of Saptarishis – Idols or images of the seven sages are placed, and special pujan samagri like flowers, kumkum, haldi, dhoop, diya, and betel leaves are offered.
Mantras and Stotra Path – Reciting mantras like “Sapta Rishi Mantra” and performing arghya (water offering) to sages is considered auspicious.
Charity & Dakshina – Devotees donate food, clothes, or essentials to Brahmins and the needy.
