According to the Ramayana and Puranas:
King Janaka of Mithila was performing a sacred yajna. During the ritual preparations, he was ploughing the field himself as part of the sacred process. While ploughing, he discovered a divine baby girl emerging from the earth.
He considered this child a divine blessing from Mother Earth and named her Sita.
Since she was born from the earth, she is known as Bhumi Putri.
