Paap Kusha Ekadashi, also known as Papankusha Ekadashi, is one of the most sacred Ekadashi fasts observed in the Hindu lunar calendar during the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the Ashwin month. This auspicious day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, particularly his form as Padmanabha, the lotus-naveled deity.

✨ Significance

The word "Paap Kusha" means destroyer of sins.
Observing this Ekadashi is believed to wash away even the gravest sins of devotees and grant them liberation (Moksha).
It is said that performing this vrata ensures a place in Vaikuntha, the eternal abode of Lord Vishnu.
The merits of this Ekadashi are considered equivalent to performing 1000 Ashwamedha Yajnas or 100 Surya Pujas.

📖 Story (Katha)

According to the Padma Purana, when Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the significance of this day, Krishna narrated:

In ancient times, a cruel hunter named Krodhan lived a sinful life of killing animals.
When his death approached, Yamraj (the God of Death) appeared to take his soul.
Trembling with fear, the hunter sought guidance from a sage, who instructed him to observe Paap Kusha Ekadashi vrat with devotion.
By sincerely keeping the fast, offering prayers to Lord Vishnu, and donating to Brahmins, the hunter was freed from his sins and attained liberation.

🙏 Rituals & Observances

Fasting – Devotees keep a fast from sunrise to the next day’s sunrise, consuming only fruits, milk, or Satvik food.
Lord Vishnu Puja – Special offerings like Tulsi leaves, incense, lamps, and Vishnu Sahasranama path are performed.
Charity & Donation – Feeding Brahmins, offering clothes, food, or Dakshina is considered highly meritorious.
Jagran & Bhajans – Many devotees spend the night chanting the name of Lord Vishnu.
Breaking the Fast (Parana) – The vrat is completed the next morning after offering prayers.
